Welcome to the Insider’s Guide to Brooklyn, our personal guide to every single neighborhood of our favorite borough. Each week, we’ll be hanging out with some of our favorite local residents to visit their essential shops, cafes, eateries, and more to inspire your next day trip in Brooklyn, New York.
Wondering why these pictures are looking a little snowier than usual? That’s because we explored the neighborhood of DUMBO, Brooklyn with blogger partners-in-crime Rachel and Nicole Effendy – the sisters behind Rachel et Nicole – during nothing other than Storm Jonas. (As in, remember that time it snowed so much that the public transportation in New York City shut down? Our adventurous intern Apneet Kaur boldly ventured outside with her camera and the blogger duo anyways.)
Rachel and Nicole have been living in the neighborhood for more than six years, so they’ve watched as DUMBO has grown into the art gallery/tech startup mecca that it’s become today. Read on for their take on the best places to visit the next time you’re in the neighborhood:
WHERE: 111 Front Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
WHY: “We have been going to AlMar since we moved here six years ago. It’s just the perfect neighborhood spot. Rachel claims that they have the best cafe mocha in the city, and our favorite brunch order is the Egg in the Cloud. It’s divine!” – Nicole.
WHERE: 38 Washington Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
WHY: “We have frequented Shibui since they were selling their authentic Japanese items in Vinegar Hill. They have only recently moved to Dumbo and we couldn’t be more thrilled. If we ever decide to redecorate our kitchen, we can only imagine the amount of Japanese cutlery and furniture that we would end up getting from there. Their kimonos are also have a special place in our heart- they have only the most beautiful and intricate pieces. Such a gem of a find!” – Rachel et Nicole.
CREATE: Creatively Wild Art Studio
WHERE: 33 Washington Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
WHY: “This is a little neighborhood secret. A room full of color and glitter – our heaven. We met the founder, Donna-Maree, through a dear friend of mine. Donna-Maree has art classes for kids and adults, and her studio is really a space for true, uninhibited expression where we can explore our creative freedom.” – Rachel et Nicole.
Read: Powerhouse Arena
WHERE: 37 Main Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
WHY: “Powerhouse Arena is exactly what it name says it is: it’s a bookstore powerhouse with an ‘arena’ within it. Not only do they have a myriad of selections of book, but we often frequent it for its talks and author reading sessions. Their inbuilt mini amphitheater makes it friendly for such events, and also a great meeting for minds alike!” – Rachel et Nicole.
Treat: One Girl Cookies
WHERE: 33 Main Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
WHY: “This place will soon be two girl cookies, considering the amount of times we come here to sit in our little corner to work on our little laptops. On weekdays, One Girl Cookies is our go-to when we meet friends or do work. Their cupcakes are TO DIE FOR. The spiked-shape icing on their cupcakes add that extra dash of individuality which is something we both strive in our expressions as well.” – Rachel et Nicole.
